Rugby Report: Huntingdon 26, St Ives 21.
The stakes were certainly high in this end-of-season local derby between the Stags and the Bulls.
Huntingdon anticipated doing the double over St Ives and overtaking them in the league and their confidence was warranted as they toppled their neighbours 26-21 at The Racecourse in their final league match of the season.
Coach leader for Huntingdon said he was ecstatic with the result.
“We certainly had the audacity to believe we could beat them. It clearly wasn’t easy, it was a tough and physical game in difficult conditions and we put in the better shift so deserved the win,” he said.
Stags now have the Papa John’s cup to look forward to and a game against Bedford Swifts.
St Ives coach Paul Humphreys admitted he was frustrated after the game.
“A frustrating day. Despite the score line, it felt like we had control for the majority of the game. Our unforced errors allowing Huntingdon to take a lead into the second half.
“Oddly our scrum never got the rewards from their dominance and we had a good platform to play off, but we huffed and huffed and never got out of second gear.
“We did not start the second half well. We then came to life after 65 minutes and started to play like we knew we could and we had Huntingdon in all sorts of problems. We just left it a little too late.”
