First team match report UCL Premier Division South - Eynesbury Rovers 2 - Desborough Town 1.
Eynesbury Rovers recorded a crucial win and a league ‘double’ over Desborough Town in this battle of the division’s bottom two clubs, and they did it the hard way having come from 1-0 down at the break.
Declan Rogers scored his first goal since his recent returned to the club, and Billy Roberts netted the 87th minute winner, only his second goal of the season.
However, in the first half, things did not appear to be going Eynesbury’s way. They fell behind in the 31st minute from a Faruq Usman shot.
Later, as Billy Roberts and Abel Alabi clashed on the half way line and fell to the ground Alabi appeared to elbow Roberts but the referee deemed the offence a yellow card for both participants.
Then in the seventh minute of stoppage time the match official awarded a very harsh penalty decision against Owen Dixon after the ball came off the defenders’ foot and struck his arm.
However, justice was served as Adam Randall’s spot kick clipped the top of the bar as it went behind.
Just four minutes into the second half Rovers drew level when a break down the right flank finished with Charlee Yearwood pulling the ball back for Rogers to fire home.
A minute later Yearwood came close to scoring when his rising drive from 25 yards went inches over the top.
Desborough also came close to snatching the lead when a header from Dom Allen-Ledgeway struck the bar and the follow up shot by Alabi produced a superb one-handed save by Reece Lewis to keep the scores level.
In the 84th minute Chris Khoo set up Yearwood but his shot was tipped over the bar by Adam Honour. However, in the aftermath Brady Stratford was sin-binned meaning that Desborough had to play the remainder of the game with 10 men.
The break-through for Eynesbury came in the 87th minute after a Jonny Hall header was tipped over the bar for a corner.
Dixon’s flag kick was kept alive at the back post by Adrian O’Hara and he delivered the ball back into the penalty area for Billy Roberts to head home a crucial winner.
Rovers had Lewis to thank for maintaining that lead as he tipped an Usman shot over the bar in the 97th and final minute.
Eynesbury have now taken seven points from their last four matches and the win moved them into 18th place, two points ahead of Leicester Nirvana and four points ahead of bottom club Desborough, who have played one game more.
Next up for Rovers is another home fixture when they welcome promotion-contenders March Town United to Hall Road on Tuesday, March 26, kick-off is 7.45pm.
