Owen Edwards reports on the weekend for St Neots Hockey Club.
A hat-trick for top goal scorer Phil McMorris helped St Neots Men’s 1s claim a 5-3 win over St Ives 2s and confirm a top four finish for the season.
After some steady build up play and pressure from Saints, McMorris was played through on goal to convert his first of the game.
St Ives came back into the game and scored twice to take the lead against the run of play.
Saints had their equaliser before half time when Matt Emery deflected in a McMorris flick from a short corner.
A well rehearsed short corner routine led to McMorris scoring his second before completing his hat trick when he was played in on goal once again.
Ives got a goal back but the win was wrapped up with David Martin fired in from a tight angle.
The Men’s 2s picked up a brilliant 3-1 win away at league leaders Cambridge South 4s.
Jake French, Rob Hoye and Andrew Pope were on target for the 2s, who may now miss out on promotion after other results went against them.
Paul Stubbs scored the only goal for the Men’s 3s in their 3-1 loss to Cambridge City 7s, while the 4s lost 2-0 away to St Ives 5s.
The Women’s 1s took another big step towards promotion, beating Spalding 1s 3-1.
After a goal-less first half, Ella Roberts opened the scoring for Saints.
Spalding drew level before an excellent team move with all players contributing was finished by leading scorer Marie Quintilla.
Quintilla scored her second to confirm the three points when she deflected in a short corner.
The Women’s 2s picked up only their second draw of the season, sharing the game 1-1 with Cambridge University 3s. Willow Browne with the goal.
Saints lost their only point last week after conceding their game, but this week’s draw means they will have at least a point at the end of a long season for them.
The Women’s 3s lost 7-0 away to Cambridge City 7s, while the 4s lost 4-2 to Pelicans 3s with Marisa Crook and Katie Biggs scoring.
