A competitive third annual Huntingdonshire FA Women’s Senior Cup Final saw Eaton Socon victorious in a tightly fought contest. Socon were favourites as they play in the higher Division of the Women’s League but Godmanchester, one Division below, were unbeaten so far this season.
In front of a large crowd there was a competitive start to the game with neither side able to break through to seriously test the opposing goalkeeper. After 15 minutes Sophie Crook did work her way clear, but Socon keeper Keeley Robinson saved comfortably.
The stalemate was broken after 19 minutes when Molly Childerley beat the Godmanchester keeper with a crisp finish to open the scoring. Seven minutes later the scores were levelled by a snap-shot from outside the area by Sophie Crook that seemed to catch the Socon keeper by surprise. The remainder of the first half saw Socon shade possession but with little significant product.
When eight minutes after the break Socon scored a second goal it put them in control as a quick break through the Godmanchester defence saw Hannah Hutchinson claim what proved to be the winning goal. Socon then sent on two substitutes and reorganised with a seemingly more defensive approach to the game.
Godmanchester enjoyed a spell of greater possession but created little although two efforts by Sophie Crook tested the Socon keeper. Towards the end of the match Godmanchester seemed to tire and Shannah Anico broke clear but fired over the bar and at the death Jade Carpenter twice denied Socon substitute Kelly Bingham.
