New travel routes, more bus services and a new bypass are being proposed for a main road in Huntingdonshire.
The A141, which runs near Huntingdon and St Ives, has been described as a "critical" part of transport across the region. However, it is frequently congested and does not have enough off-road cycling and walking facilities, or public transport options.
As a result, says Cambridgeshire County Council, the road is fraught with safety issues, poor noise and air quality, and some drivers resort to "rat-running" through villages on minor roads.
Cambridgeshire County Council is looking to resolve the issues surrounding the A141 and has devised an improvement scheme.
The proposals include seven new active travel routes; eight new public transport initiatives with a focus on bus travel and the development of a bypass to enable heavy goods vehicles and through-traffic to avoid local town centres and villages.
The active travel routes will be designated for walking, cycling and travelling by scooter, wheelchair or mobility aids.
Cambridgeshire County Council is now running a consultation into the scheme to give local residents a chance to have their say on the plans. Consultation findings will be used to help inform any future decision making.
The council is hosting a series of events and online webinars:
-
Friday, October 18 from 3pm - 7pm (drop-in event at The Coneygear Centre, Buttsgrove Way, Huntingdon PE29 1PE)
-
Tuesday, November 5 from 9am - 2pm (drop-in event at St Ives Corn Exchange, The Pavement, The Old Riverport, St Ives PE27 5AD)
-
Thursday, November 7 from 6.30pm - 8pm (online webinar)
Throughout the consultation, residents can also visit an exhibition in the Cambridgeshire County Council reception at New Shire Hall, Emery Crescent, Enterprise Campus, Alconbury Weald, Huntingdon PE28 4YE.
Cambridgeshire County Council are working with the project leaders, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority to deliver the scheme in Huntingdonshire.
