The A1 is due to shut for four weeks overnight while work is carried out by National Highways.
Flooding prevention work will take place between Wyboston and the Black Cat Roundabout with the A421. Some of the work taking place includes repairing culverts to precent flooding properties that are southbound of the A1.
A culvert is a pipe or a small tunnel that is built either under or next to a road to help make sure that water flows safely away.
In order to carry out the work, National Highways will have to shut the A1 southbound at the exit to Wyboston overnight.
A spokesperson for the organisation said: "We plan to complete this work over four weeks between Monday, September 23 and Friday, October 18.
"We will work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights, weather permitting. We will also require one weekend overnight closure from Friday, October 4 to Monday, October 7 working between 10pm and 5am each day."
A diversion route will be in place as follows:
- Follow the A428 east and then take a right at the roundabout heading south on Barford Road
- Continue south to rejoin the A1 southbound at the Tempsford entry slip road
Anyone wishing to travel west on the A421 and for local access to Roxton via the Black Cat Roundabout
- Cross the A1 at Tempsford and rejoin the A1 northbound to the Black Cat Roundabout
The work is unrelated to the ongoing National Highways scheme at Black Cat Roundabout.
