Huntingdonshire District Council members have made a decision on the proposed plans for The Priory Centre in St Neots amid concerns over privacy.

The building closed its doors in July in anticipation of a major refurbishment, and the detils were discussed at a Development Management Committee meeting on September 17.

District councillors heard the plans for the Priory Centre and St Neots Town Council Offices refurbishment, which would see a complete refurbishment of the building along with new windows and an extension.

The planning officers at Huntingdonshire District Council recommended that members approve the planning application. Their report said that the only harm in the proposal is the loss of heritage, as the views of several buildings would be obstructed.

The officers felt that this harm, which was categorised as "less than substantial", is outweighed by the benefits of the proposal. 

Douglas Bridge, the occupant of Priory House, attended the meeting via video call to voice his objection to the plans. Mr Bridge lives with his family and had concerns over their privacy if the plans were approved.

He told members: "The dormer window will look directly into my bathroom window and our family garden." He added that he was concerned that they would lose their privacy as a result. 

The planning agent said that the dormer window would be angled into Priory Lane, so there would be no view into Mr Bridge's home.

The agent also addressed concerns over parking at the new facility and said that while no new parking spaces would be provided, bike racks would be to promote sustainable travel.

Councillor Patricia Jordan said that she had "difficulty" with the size of the proposals but said she could "see the need" for the refurbishment.

Other councillors agreed that the proposals would be for the greater good, with Councillor Eric Butler saying that it would "add character" to St Neots.

Eight councillors voted in favour of the plans, one voted against and one abstained. The planning application was approved.
