East West Rail have provided an update following on from the General Election, which was held on July 4.

When the former-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on May 22 that he was calling a General Election for July, East West Rail decided to pause their consultation period.

However, with the General Election over and a Labour Prime Minister in No 10 Downing Street, East West Rail can now continue the process.

In a statement a spokesperson for East West Rail said: "The announcement of the General Election in May meant that the plans to deliver a statutory consultation at the end of June were paused. 

"Following the election, we are now working closely with new Ministers to agree the next steps for the project. Alongside those discussions, East West Rail will also be contacting all the MPs along the route to arrange meetings to discuss our plans."

One of the MPs that East West Rail will meet with is Ian Sollom, the newly-elected MP for St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire. 

At a General Election Hustings held at Love's Farm in St Neots, the candidates were asked how they think East West Rail will benefit the area's residents.

Mr Sollom said that it has to be "absolutely connected" to St Neots, whether that's through shuttle buses to the station, or creating direct links and adding cycle lanes down to the station.

He said: "If it isn't joined up properly to St Neots, it won't work."

A spokesperson for East West Rail continued: "As a company we're committed to keeping stakeholders, communities and landowners informed every step of the way and will provide an update as soon as we have more information."
