A drink driver has been disqualified after he crashed head-on into the path of another motorist.
Florin Huhurez, 27, of Burges Close, Swavesey, had been on a night out in St Ives drinking with friends when he made the decision to drive his red Audi A3 home.
At about 5.10am on July 9 last year (2023) police were called to London Road in Hemingford, close to the junction with Marsh Lane, with reports of Huhurez’s vehicle in a head-on collision with a grey Nissan Qashqai.
Huhurez blew 82 at the roadside, more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.
In hospital he gave an evidential urine sample of 174 milligrams, above the legal limit of 107 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine.
The other driver, a woman in her 30s, was taken to hospital where she was treated for injuries including a broken toe, clot in her knee, tissue damage to her calf and nerve damage to her knee.
Huhurez was also treated for serious injuries including a partial spinal fracture, internal bleeding and fluid on his lungs.
At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court yesterday (July 4), Huhurez was banned from driving for a year after pleading guilty to drink driving.
PC Toby Mcevoy, who investigated, said: “It was just luck that day that someone wasn’t more seriously injured.
“Huhurez put lives at risk when he made the decision to get in his car and drive after a night out consuming alcohol.
“The force of the crash was so great that the entire engine left the engine bay of one of the vehicles and travelled more than 30 meters along the road.”
“We encourage anyone who suspects a drink driver to report it to us.”
