A candlelight vigil is set to be held in honour of local cyclist and campaigner Mike Gough.

The vigil will be held on June 29 at the Sebastopol Cannon on George Street in Huntingdon.

It will offer residents the chance to pay their respects to Mike and stand together in memory of all victims of road crashes in Cambridgeshire and their families.

Mike, 65, from Rodney Road in Huntingdon, was killed when his bicycle was struck by a van on George Street on March 16.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and released on police bail.

Attendees are invited to gather from 10pm and bring a candle, torch or bicycle light.

At 10.30pm, speeches and poetry will be read by Mike’s wife Hazel and supporters of Hunts Walking & Cycling group, of which Mike was a founding member.

He was a passionate advocate for more cycle infrastructure and for safer streets for all road users.

Last month, Mike's family spoke to The Hunts Post about their wish for urgent action to improve road safety in the district following his death.

Those attending are encouraged to walk or cycle if they are able to do so, but free car parking is available in the council car parks in Huntingdon town centre and at Mill Common.

Mike’s family – Hazel, Ben, Kim and Rachel – has selected Cycling UK as the chosen charity if anyone would like to make a donation in Mike’s memory.

You can also leave a tribute to Mike and view some photographs and happy memories of Mike with his family on the Co-Op Funeralcare website.
