The 80th Anniversary of D-Day is taking place on Thursday, June 6, and celebrations are taking place all over the country.

Huntingdon D-Day Landings 80th Anniversary event

Huntingdon Town Council will be hosting a series of events across the town on Thursday, June 6.

At 10am, the Huntingdon in Bloom campaign will unveil a 3D themed floral display at Bus Station Green, which will feature a D-Day Landing Craft made from recycled materials and flowers.

At 10:50am, a short outdoor service will be held in Huntingdon Market Square, led by Rev Jon Randall, and featuring a reading of the poem, D-Day Heroes, by a Hinchingbrooke School student.

At 11am, a two minute silence will take place, followed with a wreath laying by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, the High Sherriff of Cambridgeshire, the Mayor of Huntingdon, and the Royal British Legion.

At 9pm, residents can assemble at Castle Hills to join the National Beacon Lighting Ceremony. It will commence at 9:10pm, with the Beacon being lit at 9:15pm by the Mayor of Huntingdon, Cllr Karl Brockett, who will be accompanied by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant. 

D-Day 80 event in St Neots

In St Neots, a D-Day flag raising event will take place at 9am at the Priory Centre.

Following that, at 11am, an observation of silence will take place at St Neots War Memorial, which has been organised by the St Neots Branch of the Royal British Legion.

D-Day poppy wreaths will also be laid at the St Neots War Memorial.

From 8:30pm, St Neots residents can gather at Regatta Meadow for the lighting of the beacon at 9:15pm.

Mayor of St Neots, Cllr Richard Slade, will be at all of the events.

Ramsey D-Day 80th Anniversary events

At 9:30am in Ramsey, the Town Council will be hosting a flag raising, followed by a walk with the 42 Eng (Geo Division) to the Mortuary Chapel, to lay crosses on the War Graves.

This will be followed by the unveiling of a new War Grave board on the Mortuary Chapel.

At the Ramsey Town Council building, a senior lunch will take place from 12:30pm-2:30pm.

From 8:30pm, residents can gather to hear the Ramsey Junior School Choir sing, the winners of the D-Day Poetry Competition read out the poems, and listen to a short service.

This will be followed by the Beacon Lighting at 9:15pm.

Cambridgeshire County Council D-Day event at New Shire Hall

The Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, Cllr Kindersley, will host a flag raising and wreath laying at New Shire Hall.

There will be some readings before the raising of the commemorative flag, which will be followed by a move inside to the War Memorial at New Shire Hall.

There, a Bugler will play The Last Post before a two minutes silence at 11am. 

Deputy Lieutenant Mr John Bridge OBE MStJ will be attending to represent the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and he, the Chair and Pete Digby, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Royal British Legion will be laying wreaths at the war memorial in the foyer of New Shire Hall.
