Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on May 22 that a General Election will be held on July 4.

To launch The Hunts Post's coverage of the General Election, we'll be speaking to candidates in the constituencies of Huntingdon, North West Cambridgeshire, and the new constituency, St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire.

Standing as a Green Party candidate in North West Cambridgeshire is Cllr Elliot Tong.

Cllr Tong serves as a Cambridge City Councillor, and is hoping to represent the North West Cambs constituency in the House of Commons.

When asked about his priorities for North West Cambridgeshire, Cllr Tong said: "As a seasoned environmental campaigner with experience working as a city councillor, I am confident that I would be able to give the people of North West Cambridgeshire the high standard of representation that they deserve.

"If elected, I would prioritise fighting to improve public transport so that we can live more sustainably, cleaning up our lakes and rivers by bringing the water companies back into public ownership, and securing fair wages for workers.

He continued: "The announcement of a general election was sudden, unexpected by many even within the Conservative Party itself.

"The Conservatives are clearly rattled, making rash, impulsive decisions in order to give themselves the best chance of hanging onto power.

"Meanwhile, Labour has no clear vision for the future, dropping pledges whenever it suits them. Both parties know that they're out of touch with the public, yet have no plans to change."

Cllr Tong said that country needs "change", adding:

"Many people are beginning to realise this; at the moment, the Greens are experiencing a surge in popularity, as voters are excited by our strong ambition and bold policies."
