Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced yesterday (May 22) that a General Election will be held on July 4.

To launch The Hunts Post's coverage of the General Election, we'll be speaking to candidates in the constituencies of Huntingdon, North West Cambridgeshire, and the new constituency, St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire.

Standing as a candidate for the Labour Party in Huntingdon is Dr Alex Bulat.

Dr Bulat has lived in Huntingdon since 2023, and told The Hunts Post that it's "special" to her as it's where she became a British citizen, and where she will be buying her first home.

She has been a Cambridgeshire County Councillor since 2021, and runs her own business in the non-profit and small organisation sector as the Director of Operations.

Dr Bulat said: "I am not just visiting or shopping for a political career. This is the community I have put roots in and I love living here.

"This is why I want to serve the Huntingdon constituency to be a better place for all. I want to be a principled, pragmatic and present constituency MP who gets the basics of the job right - to represent residents' views in Parliament and promote all that our wonderful towns and villages have to offer."

"I experience every day the issues residents care about, from the rising cost of housing, to being on a multiple year NHS waiting list and the decline of our public transport, especially our rural buses."

She told The Hunts Post that Rishi Sunak's announcement yesterday came as a "surprise".

Dr Bulat said: "The news took me by surprise, but after 14 years of the Conservatives, the country needs change and we need a new hope for Huntingdon.

"I am ready to make the case for an alternative for Huntingdon, St Ives and our Huntingdonshire towns, villages and hamlets."
