Reporter Ben Jolley visited Sandpiper Pool and Spa in Somersham which, having opened five years ago, is a must for those in search of some tranquillity. Here's what he thought of the experience.
Tucked away in Cambridgeshire, a hidden gem of pure relaxation awaits.
“I’ve always loved spas but I’ve noticed that they’re getting busier and busier, which means there’s no real space to relax,” says Emma Procter, who runs the self-built independent business with her husband Tim.
“I thought to myself that I can’t be the only person who wants to chill and switch off from the world,” she adds.
Emma is right: often when visiting public spas, it’s hard to have a conversation without being shushed or overheard, and just when you think you’ve got the hot tub to yourselves, a stream of people get in seconds later.
This isn’t an issue at Sandpiper however, because it’s a completely private experience: whether visiting as a couple or as a larger party of up to eight, the entire space is yours.
With a large heated swimming pool, a jacuzzi opening out to a picturesque garden and pond, rainfall shower, sauna, relaxation room with heated water beds, steam room, ice room, snow room (one of only a handful in the country with real snow) and two pre-bookable treatment rooms, it’s easy to see why so many people - often from different parts of the country - make the journey to Sandpiper.
“Most of our custom comes from word of mouth, and we have a lot of regulars and returning guests,” says Emma.
Sandpiper is also bringing tourism to the local area as guests stay at nearby hotels when they visit.
Some great achievements have been recognised over the past half-decade, with Sandpiper having won several awards.
This year it is once again a finalist in the Good Spa Guide’s ‘best day spa’ category and they are very proud to have achieved the highly acclaimed 5 Bubble Spa rating for the last four years.
The changing area of the spa has everything you need, including fluffy robes, towels, hairdryers, straighteners and a range of complimentary aromatherapy face and body products for guests to use.
There is also a large lounge area which, inspired by a ski hotel lounge, has a variety of comfy chairs and sofas, giving a modern yet traditional country hotel feel.
With plenty of plates and glasses, and the fact that guests are free to bring their own alcohol if they wish, Sandpiper is an ideal choice of activity for hen party, birthday groups and other celebrations.
The extra touches really make your visit even more memorable: with options to choose your music in the different areas via a range of different channels, colour-changing lighting, mindfulness cards, magazines and refreshments including juice, tea, coffee and biscuits are all included.
With prices starting at £150 per person for three hours, and rising to £350 for a full day (which includes a buffet), Sandpiper is certainly worth splashing out on for some well deserved self-care or that special occasion.
There is currently a 30% discount offer for groups of four or more.
