The Home Office has issued a blanket response after six men were found in a lorry on the A142.

Police received a dropped 999 call from an individual struggling to breathe in the trailer of an articulated lorry travelling on the M11 into Cambridgeshire yesterday (Wednesday April 10).

The men were checked over by crews from the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust before being taken into our custody in relation to immigration offences.

The case is understood to have been passed to the UK Border Agency for investigation, but it is not yet understood whether the driver is suspected of people trafficking.

Newsquest Cambridgeshire approached the Home Office to request a comment on the condition on the six individuals and whether action was being taken against the driver of the lorry.

This is the response we received.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are relentless in our pursuit of people-smuggling gangs and stand ready to respond to all methods, including lorries and other clandestine routes.

“Our extensive security measures include robust, specialist measures from Border Force and Immigration Enforcement who work closely with our international partners.

"We have also introduced tougher legislation and continue to work with our French counterparts to disrupt vile people-smuggling gangs.”
