Shakespeare at The George (SaTG) has announced it is looking for a new venue after losing its home of more than 65 years.
The registered charity has performed in the atmospheric open-air Jacobean courtyard of The George Hotel in Huntingdon since 1959, putting on 563 performances in front of more than 75,000 people.
An open-air production of Hamlet on June 26 will be the last time the award-winning local theatre company performs at the iconic venue following the decision of owners Greene King to terminate the charity’s contract.
SaTG is seeking alternative venues in the Huntingdon area to enable it to continue to play an active role in the community through the development of theatre skills in individuals and local organisations through bursaries and costumes.
“Whilst Greene King’s decision came as a shock, we are determined that this year’s production of Hamlet will end our time at The George on a suitably high note, said Reuben Milne from SATG.
“Alongside putting on an incredible final production at The George, the trustees of SaTG will be doing everything possible to continue the legacy of the last 65 years because we are more than just a theatre company.
He added: “As well as bringing Shakespeare to life for tens of thousands of people through inclusive performances, the bursaries we distribute annually have helped support young people, community groups and local schools further develop their theatre skills and fund productions.
“We passionately believe in the value that a thriving cultural scene brings to the town of Huntingdon and the wider community and we’re proud of the role we’ve played in that since 1959.”
A spokesperson for Greene King told The Hunts Post: "We have been very pleased to support the annual performance of the Shakespeare play at The George Hotel for many years, however after this summer, we are no longer able to commit to the annual dates that are set in the agreement due to other commitments and events we hold at the hotel during this period."
