Kial Thompson was caught shoplifting in Lidl, in Eaton Socon, by an off-duty Cambridgeshire Police officer in December 2023.
Thompson, of no fixed abode, was spotted "acting suspiciously" in the alcohol aisle of the Eaton Socon store at 2.40pm on December 17, 2023.
The off-duty Cambridgeshire Police officer saw him stashing a bottle of wine under his jacket before running to the exit.
The officer chased Thompson into the foyer and ordered him to hand over the wine.
Thompson replied "alright, alright" to the officer and handed over the wine.
He then pulled two more bottles of wine and four packets of steak from his jacket.
The stolen products amounted to £42.59 and he was arrested.
During an interview with Cambridgeshire Police, he admitted to stealing the items and said he "felt stupid" about the theft.
On Friday, February 2, at Huntingdon Law Courts, Thompson, 31, was sentenced to 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to theft at a previous hearing.
