Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) has announced the launch of its Community Grant Scheme, an initiative designed to promote biodiversity and strengthen local communities in the region.

Funded by Cambridge & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) and delivered by HDC, up to £8,000 in funding is available from the scheme for projects which look towards enhancing biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

Open to Town and Parish Councils, schools, and community organisations, the grant program offers an "invaluable opportunity" for residents to make a positive impact on their local environment.

Executive Councillor for climate and environment, Lara Davenport-Ray, said: "Neighbourhood groups and parish councils often ask me for advice on supporting nature in their community.

"This grant scheme is a direct response to the enthusiasm shown by our residents to restore habitats and try new planting schemes.

"Starting a community project like this can be overwhelming and intimidating, so this opportunity is about more than just funding.

"Successful applicants will also receive advice and support from HDC staff.

For those who secure a site visit, grant opportunities of up to £8,000 for projects that encompass a wide range of activities.

  • Tree/shrub planting

  • Hedgerow gapping-up

  • Wildlife boxes 

  • Pond and habitat creation and restoration

  • Landscaping

  • Wildflower planting

Expression of Interest submissions are open in two phases.

The first window is open now until the end of November 2023, and the second opportunity will be available from January to February 2024.
