Trainer Emma Lavelle continued her flying start to the season at Huntingdon on Monday October 30 after General Medrano maintained his unbeaten record over fences following a smart success in the Macer Gifford Handicap Chase. 

Despite being burdened with top-weight in the extended two-mile feature, which is named after the late jockey Macer Gifford, who was born in Little Stukeley, it failed to stop the 8-11 favourite from backing up his debut victory over fences at Uttoxeter 22 days ago by three lengths in the hands of jockey Tom Bellamy.

Lavelle said: “Last season was all about learning. He is a big horse and he is just getting stronger. He finished fourth in the two-mile novices’ championship final handicap hurdle at Sandown Park and we walked away thinking we can’t wait to go over fences.  

“We said if he wins today we can start looking at bigger options, but this is a nice prize and it is a lovely race to win with a lot of history. I think we can be a little bit excited about him now.”

The Lambourn handler said: “He pricked his ears in front and didn’t do a tap, but when they came to him he went away nicely.

“He is from the family of Tricky Trickster who won the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham so he is going to want a trip. I think he is a nice young horse and he has the world at his feet now.”
