Somersham Primary School has been awarded the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Healthy Schools Award for their positive, whole-school approach towards nutrition and wellbeing.
The aim of the healthy schools award is to encourage schools to review the initiatives currently in place and the work being carried out to improve the health, wellbeing and resilience of the school community.
On its accreditation journey, the school, part of the Meridian Trust, has ensured that health and wellbeing has been woven into its curriculum.
The school council has worked alongside the lunchtime provider to discuss the school dinner menu, and year fives and sixes were visited by a community magistrate and the local neighbourhood police sergeant where the learned about safety in the community.
Giving the award, the auditor commended the school for the “inspiring and diverse range of initiatives that are provided to the pupils”, which will help “to enrich their life experiences, develop their resilience, and empower them to make healthier choices.”
Headteacher, Jonathan Clarke, said: “We are really proud to have received the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s Healthy School Award, in recognition of the work we do at Somersham to promote healthy lifestyles.”
“It has never been more important to encourage this, both physically and mentally, so that our children move onto secondary school and beyond with a secure understanding of what ‘healthy’ looks like.”
Another successful initiative has been the development of the PE provision at the school. This has included participation, and success, in local tournaments, including recently representing the school at a county netball final after winning a district event.
Deputy CEO of Meridian Trust, Lesley Birch, said: “Staff and pupils across Somersham should be incredibly proud of their efforts.
"Their commitment and dedication to embedding health and wellbeing within the school has been inspiring to watch and absolutely embodies the health practice we promote across the Trust.”
