St Neots woman to tackle Great North Run for stroke victim

Lizzie Driver-Edgar of St Neots took a phone call from her friend and work colleague Sarah asking her to come round after Sarah’s husband Carlos Camoira fell ill. 

“I rushed over and it soon became apparent that Carlos was becoming unresponsive very quickly,” said Lizzie. 

“Sarah and I started CPR; Carlos was given the best chance as we fought to save him with the medical help he received at home.” 

Carlos, who had a fit, healthy lifestyle, died in January aged 51 following a stroke. 

“He did not have an unhealthy lifestyle and used to be in the gym most mornings before work,” Lizzie said. 

“I couldn’t believe this had happened to him.”

Lizzie has decided to tackle the Great North Run for the Stroke Association on September 10 and ahead of the 13.1-mile event, she alongside Sarah took part in the 100 Miles for March challenge. 

And the 41-year-old hopes by raising money in this way, she can help others understand a stroke can affect anyone. 

“I want to make sure that Carlos’ memory lives on, and that people realise that it is not just older and unhealthy people that can have a stroke,” Lizzie added. 

“I want to raise awareness for the Stroke Association to try and make sure more people know about the work and research being done.”

The Stroke Association says around 1.3 million people are living with the impact of a stroke.
