The coordinator at one of Huntingdonshire’s Warm Spaces says she has noticed the community unite during the cost-of-living crisis.

Val Fendley, of the Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust, said: “Everybody is really coming together this winter; it feels like war time spirit.”

The small charity organises its sessions at Ramsey Library on a Monday and Wednesday and provides crafts, games and activities for children.

It means the library building is now open to residents who want to stay somewhere warm for six days of the week.

Numbers attending the sessions have been steadily increasing.

Twenty went to the first Monday session in December, just before the cold snap arrived.

As well as bringing the community together, Val commented that people are also changing their approach to the cost-of-living crisis.

The Hunts Post:

She said: “Those who come along are not just people who can’t afford to put the heating on.

“Many feel socially isolated in their home and come out to meet, and be around, people.

“We advertise the sessions as being open to everyone for a chat and a cup of tea.

“We have a wide variety of people come along, from older people who are at home all day to new parents with their young families.

“One chap had only lived in Ramsey for two days and didn’t know anyone in the area. I think we managed to help him feel settled there.”

The Hunts Post:

She added: “Since we set up the group, there has been a change in attitude towards many everyday issues like energy use and cutting costs.

“As another small example, the sewing group has inspired more people to repair their clothes rather than buy new.

“Everyone is really helping each other out, and it has been wonderful to watch.”

In the new year, Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust will be coordinating another session with the Royal British Legion.

This will also include lunch and is being made possible with the backing of a local business, Ramsey Self Store.

Further details will be released when finalised.

The Hunts Post:

More than 40 venues across Huntingdonshire have opened as ‘Warm Spaces’ this winter and are registered with Huntingdonshire District Council.

The Hunts Post has launched its ‘There With You This Winter’ campaign which aims to support our communities through the tough winter months ahead.
