Covid tests on arrival and six person “bubble squares” could be in place to keep revellers safe at this year’s Cambridge Comedy Festival near Huntingdon.
The three-day event will descend on Abbots Ripton from Friday July 9 to Sunday July 11.
It’s set to host comedians Rob Beckett, Al Murray, Dara Ó Briain and Ed Byrne.
Organisers revealed on social media that "with the concern regarding new Indian variant" they would be ramping up safety measures only if government plans change for June 21.
A statement read: "With the concern regarding the new Indian variant we’ve decided to take the initiative to ensure all festival attendees are safe and can enjoy the event.
"Building on the recent scientifically successful trial events (football, snooker, rave, live music gig and the Brit Awards) where attendees produced a negative lateral flow test upon arrival, and there were zero positive tests five days post event, we shall be using the same system of testing upon arrival.
"We will reinforce safety measures by having 6 person bubble squares marked out throughout the site.
"All stages, bars and food traders are outdoors so we’ll have a standard 2m queueing system in place.
"However, bubbles of six and pre-event testing are only pre-emptive measures we’ve put in place in light of the new Indian variant.
"But if by the time of our event it’s under control and the relaxing of social distancing rules as per step four are given the green light - hopefully on June 21 - then these measures will not be required.
"We want everyone to have a fun time at our fantastic festival and we will ensure we do everything possible to keep you safe."
