The winners of our latest instalment of the Environmental Champion of the week awards go to Buckden CE primary school pupils for their fantastic triumph at the Rotary Young Environmentalists Competition 2021/22.
The school received an invitation to enter the competition in the Autumn last year and, on April 1, finished with seven pupils taking up the top three positions in an unprecedented result.
The competition was open to individuals, schools, scouts, guides, cubs, brownies, rotakids and Interact groups.
Deputy headteacher Michelle Heather said: "The president of the Rotary Club explained that this was very special, as this was the first time that all the winners had come from just one school."
For the competition, pupils had to work individually or in a group of up to four to create either a written or artistic presentation on how to tackle climate change and reduce carbon.
The Rotary Club of Huntingdon's president Deborah Napier-Reynolds, and Reverend Clive Doubleday, presented first place to Iris, Mihai and Jack, second place to Terry and Adam and third place went to Lilly and Georgia.
Michelle said: "The children have a very good understanding of climate change and its causes and the small everyday things we can do to help as well as the bigger and more challenging changes that are needed by governments and industries."
As winners, Iris, Mihai and Jack have been entered into the national competition, where they have been given the unique challenge of putting their climate knowledge and environmental skills to the test.
Iris, Mihai and Jack will also meet with the school Eco-council to decide what they should put a £100 voucher towards, which was earned from the pupil's collective and impressive efforts during the competition.
The school's curriculum is based around the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals set in place by the United Nations.
These goals are designed to be a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all and helped provide the foundations for Buckden's pupils to triumph.
